Eric Goes, Rodrygo's father, made a number of controversial comments about his son's clash with Leo Messi in Brazil's 1-0 defeat to Argentina at Maracana.

The match was an ill-tempered affair which was actually delayed by an incident in the crowd in which Argentinean fans appeared to be attacked by Brazilian police.

A number of Argentine players went over to the area of concern in the crowd, with goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez even jumping in to lightly strike a particularly aggressive officer.

"The saint who doesn't get in trouble with anyone? Really, is anyone surprised?" Rodrygo's father posted ironically on Instagram, referring to Messi.

He was referring to Messi's clash with his son, as well as the recent battle he had with Uruguayan players in a separate international match.

On that occasion Messi appeared to grab Mathias Olivera by the neck to defend Rodrigo De Paul, who had been involved in an earlier scuffle with Olivera.

TV cameras caught Manuel Ugarte making an obscene gesture to Rodrigo de Paul while saying "Chupav*** de Messi. Ma****era"

"These young people have to learn because they have a good camp. They have to learn respect because this Clasico was always intense and hard, but with a lot of respect," Messi said after his incident with Uruguay's players.

What was Lionel Messi's incident with Rodrygo Goes?

Leo Messi and Rodrygo Goes had a clash on the Maracana pitch after the incidents in the stands.

The newspaper 'Ole' reported that the Real Madrid player said something that Messi didn't like, and the veteran responded by grabbing the Brazilian by the back of the neck.

"Why are we cowards? We are world champions," Messi was seen as saying.
