- NCAA. Aday Mara imposes his 2.22m frame on UCLA: Double-digit rushing and high blocking
Zach Edey, the 2.24 m., 138 kg. Canadian giant, definitively established himself in the NCAA with his great performance to lead Purdue to a 78-75 win over Marquette and proclaim the 'Boilermakers' champions of the Maui Invitational.
The colossal 21-year-old Ontario-born center, who is averaging 22 points, 10.8 rebounds and 3 blocks this season, finished with 28 points and 15 rebounds.
"Zach Edey is a horse. He's a moose on the court. Zach doesn't have the bulls**t that a lot of young guys that get drafted have; he doesn't have that. He goes to play and he wants to win," explained his coach Matt Painter.
Edey, who averaged 22.3 points, 12.9 rebounds and 2.1 blocks last season to be named Big Ten Player of the Year, was named the Maui Invitational MVP thanks to his 25.3 points and 13 rebounds average.
How did Zach Edey get his start in basketball?
Zach Edey, who got his start playing lacrosse, soccer, tennis, ice hockey and baseball before making the jump to basketball at age 12 after being discovered by Vidal Massiah, has left behind such harsh criticisms as "he's just tall, if he wasn't 2.24m he'd be flipping burgers."
"He came home excited. He said to me, 'That was so much fun.' And I said, 'What did you do?' He was very excited. He said, 'We got suicides (a basketball drill).' And I said, 'Oh my God, you think that's fun,'" Zach Edey's mother recalled of her son's basketball beginnings in an interview by 'cbc.ca.'
Zach's mother explained that "I think baseball sharpened his mind. His father used to tell him, the only important play is the next play or the next pitch. Forget about what happened."
