The Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) is an annual accolade presented by the Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA) to outstanding players in Major League Baseball (MLB). Instituted in 1931, the award recognizes one player from the American League and one from the National League. Before 1931, similar awards existed, such as the League Award and the Chalmers Award.

MVP voting occurs before the postseason, with results disclosed post-World Series. The BBWAA offers no precise definition of "most valuable," leaving it to voters' interpretation.

Initially named after Kenesaw Mountain Landis in 1944, the award underwent a change in 2020 due to Landis' controversial history regarding MLB integration.

Various positional players have won MVPs, with pitchers rarely claiming the honor. Notably, in 2021, Shohei Ohtani became the first pitcher since 2014 and the first in the AL since 2011 to win, also making history as the first two-way player to receive the award.

The MVP has seen ties (1979), unanimous winners, and notable streaks, including Barry Bonds' seven-time consecutive victories from 2001 to 2004. Frank Robinson is unique for winning in both the American and National Leagues. The New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals lead in team victories, while the Arizona Diamondbacks, New York Mets, and Tampa Bay Rays have never had an MVP recipient.

Before the modern MVP, the Chalmers Award (1911-1914) recognized players deemed "most important and useful." The BBWAA took over the MVP in 1931, adapting the National League's format. Changes in the number of voters occurred in 1938 (three per city) and 1961 (two per league city).

Ty Cobb secured the inaugural American League Chalmers Award in 1911 and Lefty Grove of the Philadelphia Athletics was the first player to win the MVP award two decades later.
